YOUTH BASEBALL: Bruins beat San Bernardino for title.

By all accounts, the American Legion State Tournament final in Yountville on Tuesday morning was not a great baseball game. But that was certainly OK with Wilson High.

The Bruins got another good start, this time from Ty Provenchar, and made fewer mistakes in an 11-5 victory over defending state champ San Bernardino to claim the tournament title and advance to the regionals.

"It was two tired teams out there today," said Wilson coach Andy Hall, noting nine errors in the game, four by his own team. "We just outpitched and outhit them a little. I think we outlasted them more than anything. They played two games yesterday and needed to beat us twice today.... We can call ourselves California state champions."

The victory moved Wilson into the eight-team double-elimination regional tournament, which begins Aug. 6 at Southwestern College in Las Vegas. The Bruins are the first local team since Los Alamitos in 2004 to reach the regionals. They are also the first Long Beach team since Peterson Post (Poly) to win the state title since 1963.

Even though Hall and the Bruins are drained after several weeks of competing, they were stoked to move on, especially when they heard about all the perks.

"We're going to Vegas!" Hall said. "They were talking about us getting on a plane next Wednesday and putting us up in a hotel. We are going to let it rip and see what happens."  Wilson, which defeated San Bernardino in the state opener, scored three runs in the first inning and three more in the second to take a 6-0 lead. Doing a good part of the damage Tuesday was the red-hot Daniel DeWolf, who went 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs and finished the tournament 10-for-15 with nine RBIs and seven runs scored. Soloman Williams chipped in with a big two-run base hit.  Provenchar went a solid eight innings, walking none and striking out three. His performance was good enough to give the Bruins an 8-5 cushion going into the final frame. The Bruins were gifted three runs in the top of the ninth to put the game away. They loaded the bases before the pitcher's pickoff attempt of third base went awry. The errant play allowed the ball to travel down the third-base line and Wilson to score three more runs to make it 11-5.

"I felt good about that (8-5 lead)," said Hall, who liked the six-run lead all the better. "That was like a three-run homer for free."

Sean Buckle closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth.

There will be a fundraiser for the Bruins' trip to Las Vegas Monday at 6:30p.m. at the Beach Club,

5755 E. Pacific Coast Highway
, which will donate 20 percent of the night's receipts to the team.

The Wilson High Bruins captured the California State American Legion Championship today!!! They went undefeted and will play in the Regional's next week. This is the first State Championship for a Long Beach team since 1963! Other winners were 1944 and 1930. I don't know what schools the other champions were from but it's believed this is the first Championship for Wilson!

Wilson finished strong by winning their final two games to finish 9-3 in the Moore League... It just wasn't quite good enough... Poly got beat by Lakewood to end their year at 8-4 for 4th place in the Moore League.  Lakewood took first with an excellent season and 10-2 in the league, both losses coming at the hands of the Bruins.. So final standings:

Lakewood 1st

Wilson/Millikan tied for 2nd

Poly 4th

Update...Update.. Wednesday

is it... Wednesday we are all Poly Fans!!!

If you aren't following Moore League Baseball this year....you are missing a great season.

Lakewood has a nationally ranked team, however Wilson has beat them twice this year.  Millikan for some reason has had our number this year and beat us twice... We split our games with the Jackrabbits...and now it all comes down to this week.  Wilson needs to win it's last two games to finish 9-3 in the Moore League.  Millikan is almost assured of a win next week to also finish 9-3. If Poly can somehow beat Lakewood this week, both Lakewood and Poly would also finish 9-3 for a four way tie for 1st in the Moore League.... That is right we all have to root for Poly this week... Go Rabbits!!!

UPDATE: Wilson got by a nail biter against Cabrillo..Only one more win to go 9-3.  The Moore league ends on Wednesday... Millikan needs to beat Jordan, Wilson needs to beat Compton... Poly needs to beat Lakewood.. for a 4 way tie for first... Go Jackrabbits!!!!
